I experienced something similar recently on a Xiaomi device, and only some text fields were impacted (for example a login text field), but not all.
Can you reproduce with --keyboard=aoa (if you're not on Windows)?

Can you reproduce with a real physical keyboard (connected via bluetooth or USB directly to the device)?
