Interest in contributing code to the project

Hello Sir,
I need to use the project for my research. However, there are certain functions I need and unavailable. I decide to write them by my self. However, I am a new comer to github. Can use tell me how to fork this project, make a local version of this project and import the local version to a testing program in my computer?
